The Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences presents to its readers this special issue of the “Orientalistica” Journal, dedicated to modern China Studies and timed to the XX CPC Congress, held in Beijing on October 16–22, 2022. This Congress is a truly historic milestone, ushering in a new era for the CPC, the People’s Republic of China and the entire Chinese people. Summarizing the results of China’s development in the field of economics, politics and international relations, ideology, culture and education during the “Reforms and Openness” period is extremely useful for exploring the trajectories of China’s future development in the XXI century, up to the centenary of the PRC in 2049, designed by the Chinese leadership as the most important benchmark for building a Middle-class Society (xiao kang), the Socialism with Chinese characteristics in a New Era and the United Prosperous China.

In this regard, we are glad to present the articles authored by nearly twenty prominent Russian sinologists, who give quite a comprehensive picture of Modern China and, hopefully, would make a significant positive contribution to enhancing the Modern China Studies in Russia, as well as to the development of Russian-Chinese relations of comprehensive strategic partnership and interaction entering a New Era.
